The Zenach Throw Blanket balances an airy cotton weave with lines of traditional Ethiopian pattern. Narrow stripes travel across the cloth at changing intervals, joined by small geometric details that interrupt the open ground with moments of color and texture. Sabahar’s signature twisted fringe extends the pattern beyond the loom, finishing each end with a loose, tactile edge.
Hand spun Ethiopian cotton gives the blanket its softly varied surface. Unlike the heavier Mechot weave, Zenach is light enough to move easily from the sofa to the bed, porch, or picnic. Its generous 55 by 78 inch size provides ample coverage without the weight of a dense winter blanket.
Traditional Ethiopian Motif: Stripes and small patterned bands draw from Ethiopian textile design and are created as part of the weave rather than printed onto the finished surface.
Hand Spun Cotton: Individually spun yarns introduce subtle shifts in thickness that give the cloth its distinctive texture.
Large Loom Weaving: The full width of the blanket is woven on one of the large traditional looms in Sabahar’s Addis Ababa workshop.
Twisted Fringe: Hand finished fringe adds movement along the edges and reflects a detail used throughout Sabahar’s textile collections.
Every stage of production, from spinning and dyeing to weaving and finishing, is completed by hand in Sabahar’s workshop. The slower process preserves the qualities of the cotton and allows the woven pattern to develop through the skill of the artisans rather than mechanical reproduction.
Sabahar is a woman owned Ethiopian textile company that has worked for more than twenty years to preserve traditional spinning and weaving while creating reliable employment. The company provides fair wages, safe working conditions, and long term work for more than 100 artisans and is a guaranteed member of the World Fair Trade Organization.
Almond: A warm natural ground with softly contrasting woven bands.
Copper: A saturated earthen red that gives the lighter pattern greater definition.
Stone: A versatile gray neutral that emphasizes the changes in yarn and texture.
Steel Blue: A deep blue that creates the strongest contrast between the ground and patterned details.
Because each blanket is hand spun, woven, and dyed in small batches, slight differences in color and texture are expected. These variations reflect the individual yarns and processes behind the finished cloth.
Zenach can be folded across the foot of a bed, draped over a sofa, or wrapped around the shoulders on a cool morning. Its large dimensions also make it useful as a picnic blanket or an extra layer for outdoor evenings. When not in use, the horizontal pattern and twisted fringe allow it to remain part of the room rather than needing to be stored away.
