The Roha Kitchen Towel begins with Ethiopian cotton spun by hand, a slower process that gives the finished cloth its rich texture and subtle irregularity. Colored stripes cross the natural cotton ground, while Sabahar’s signature twisted fringe finishes both ends.
Soft, absorbent, and machine washable, the towel is made to handle daily work in the kitchen. Its generous size also allows it to serve as a hand towel, line a bread basket, cover rising dough, or add a woven layer beneath serving pieces.
Spun by Hand: Hand spinning creates natural shifts in the yarn that remain visible throughout the finished cloth.
Traditional Loom Weaving: Each towel is woven by artisans in Addis Ababa using traditional Ethiopian looms and established techniques.
Twisted Fringe: Hand finished fringe gives the towel a distinctive edge and reflects Sabahar’s recognizable textile style.
Small Batch Color: The towels are dyed and woven in small batches, allowing slight differences in color and weave from one piece to another.
Woman Owned Business: Sabahar has operated as a woman owned Fair Trade textile company in Ethiopia for more than 20 years.
Fair Trade Production: The company provides fair wages, safe working conditions, and reliable employment for artisans in Addis Ababa.
Preserving Textile Traditions: Sabahar’s work supports Ethiopian spinning and weaving practices by carrying them into useful contemporary textiles.
Named for Roha: The towel takes its name from the ancient city of Roha, now known as Lalibela in northern Ethiopia.
Daily Drying: Use for drying dishes, glassware, hands, and kitchen surfaces.
Bread & Baking: Line a bread basket or cover dough while it rests.
Serving Layer: Place beneath a bowl, platter, or cutting board to introduce woven texture and color.
Kitchen or Bath: The absorbent cotton and generous length also make it suitable as a bathroom hand towel.
