The Mechot Throw Blanket is made for the kind of comfort that asks you to settle in. Thick Ethiopian cotton gives it satisfying weight, while a subtle herringbone weave adds depth without turning the pattern into the focus. Draped across a chair or folded at the foot of a bed, it brings warmth, texture, and the unmistakable character of cloth made by hand.
Its generous 51 by 78 inch size offers ample coverage for curling up on the sofa, yet the natural breathability of cotton keeps it useful beyond the coldest months. Hand tied fringe softens the edges, and the restrained colors allow the details of the weave to emerge through every fold.
The blanket takes its name from michot, an Amharic word for comfort, a fitting name for its thick cotton weave and enveloping warmth.
Traditional Four Harness Weave: The blanket is woven on a four harness loom, creating its dimensional herringbone pattern and substantial weight.
Ethiopian Cotton: Made entirely from natural Ethiopian cotton for warmth, breathability, and a tactile surface that softens further with use.
Handworked from Start to Finish: Spinning, dyeing, weaving, and finishing are completed by hand in Sabahar’s Addis Ababa workshop.
Hand Tied Fringe: Knotted ends complete the blanket with a textured border shaped by the finishing artisan.
Sabahar is a woman owned Ethiopian textile company founded more than twenty years ago to preserve the country’s weaving and spinning traditions while creating reliable artisan employment. Today, its Addis Ababa workshop provides fair wages, safe working conditions, and long term work for more than 100 artisans.
Sabahar is a guaranteed member of the World Fair Trade Organization, with its practices independently assessed across the business and supply chain. Each Mechot blanket carries that commitment through a textile designed to be used often and kept for years.
Bronze: A rich earthen brown that emphasizes the depth of the herringbone weave.
Mint: A softened green that brings color into the room without overpowering surrounding pieces.
Beige: A warm natural shade that places the cotton texture at the center.
Ivory: A light, versatile neutral that makes the woven pattern especially visible.
Because the blankets are dyed and woven in small batches, slight differences in color and texture are expected. These variations are part of the handmade process rather than flaws in the finished textile.
