Taking its name from the Italian word for “sea,” the Mare Peşkir is defined by the shifting balance of blue and ivory within its reversible weave. One face leaves a broad expanse of pale cotton beneath a narrow patterned border; the other brings the blue threads forward in a denser field of fine marks. Handwoven in Denizli, Turkey, it has the lightness and adaptability that have kept the peşkir in daily use for generations.
Maritime Blue: Clear blue thread gives the towel a fresh, water-inspired character that feels equally at home in kitchens, baths, and outdoor settings.
Ivory Ground: The natural-toned cotton softens the contrast and reveals the small irregularities that distinguish a woven textile from a printed surface.
Changing Pattern: Folding, turning, or loosely draping the towel exposes different proportions of blue and ivory, allowing its appearance to shift with use.
Western Turkish Origin: Woven in Denizli, a region renowned for cotton textiles and the production of pestemals and peşkirs for homes and hammams.
Generational Technique: A small family workshop uses established weaving methods to create the compact flat weave and individually knotted fringe.
Purposeful Structure: Closely set warp and weft threads provide absorbency while avoiding the thickness of looped terrycloth.
Glassware and Dishes: The smooth weave is useful for drying cups, plates, and glassware without the bulk of a conventional kitchen towel.
At the Basin: Its size and finished fringe allow it to function as a generous hand towel in a powder room or guest bath.
Picnic and Travel: Compact enough to carry as a napkin, drying cloth, or small surface covering for meals away from home.
Layered Table Setting: Place beneath a carafe, bowl, or serving board to introduce a crisp band of blue.
