Inspired by the pattern work of Koloman Moser, this Indian cotton quilt balances two very different visual languages. One printed shell carries small ochre botanical motifs across pale cotton, framed by a warm geometric border. The contrasting shell is covered in a dense charcoal pattern that reads almost like woven lattice from a distance.
Both surfaces are printed by hand using carved wooden blocks, then filled and stitched in the homes of Indian quiltmakers. The resulting quilt moves easily between bright, patterned rooms and quieter spaces grounded in black, cream, wood, and warm earth tones.
Ochre Botanical Print: Small stylized flowers create an orderly repeat across the pale cotton ground.
Charcoal Geometry: A dark, tightly arranged pattern offers a graphic counterpoint to the lighter floral composition.
Patterned Borders: Strong edge treatments frame the larger field and give the quilt a finished architectural structure.
Moser-Inspired Design: The composition draws from Koloman Moser’s distinctive approach to stylized natural forms and disciplined geometry.
The quilt begins with wood carvers in Jaipur, who shape the blocks required for its detailed patterns. Block printers then press each section onto cotton by hand, building the designs one layer of dye at a time.
The completed cotton shells are carried to quiltmakers working from their homes. There, they are filled with pure cotton and stitched together by hand. Dye specialists complete the fourth area of expertise involved in bringing the finished textile together.
Cotton Voile Exterior: Lightweight cotton voile gives the printed surfaces a soft, breathable finish.
Pure Cotton Filling: Cotton stuffing provides warmth without introducing synthetic fill.
Small-Batch Production: Each production run retains subtle differences created by manual printing, filling, and stitching.
Hand-Finished Character: Variations in motif alignment, color, and quilting distinguish each completed piece.
