No two bars should look exactly alike, and neither do these handcrafted bottle openers. Each one pairs a polished metal opener with a naturally tapered Ankole horn handle, revealing colors that can range from creamy white and honeyed amber to deep brown and black.
The horn is sourced from Ankole Watusi cattle raised in western Uganda and other parts of East Africa. Rather than allowing this food industry byproduct to go to waste, Maadili Collective works with a small scale Fair Trade artisan cooperative in Uganda to transform it into functional barware with unmistakable natural character.
Every Horn Reveals a Different Pattern
Color, markings, translucence, and shape are determined by the original horn, ensuring that no two openers are identical. Some pieces display strong bands of contrasting color, while others feature softer gradients and richly saturated tones.
A Byproduct Given New Purpose
The Ankole horn is purchased directly from rural cattle keepers, creating an additional source of revenue for cattle raising communities. Artisans then cut, carve, shape, and polish the material by hand instead of allowing it to be discarded.
Sculptural Form with Everyday Function
The elongated horn handle rests comfortably in the hand and provides leverage for lifting bottle caps. When not in use, its curved silhouette and natural color make it a distinctive addition to a bar cart, drinks cabinet, or countertop.
