A passing breeze sets this handcrafted glass wind bell in motion, producing a clear, refreshing tone inspired by the sound of water moving through a mountain stream. Its rounded glass form is finished with flowing bands of color and a suspended paper strip that catches even a gentle current of air.
Known in Japan as furin, wind bells have been associated with the seasons for more than 200 years. These contemporary versions are handcrafted by Tsugaru Vidro artisans in Aomori, Japan, continuing the seasonal tradition through expressive color and carefully engineered sound.
A Centuries Old Seasonal Tradition
Furin are traditionally hung near open windows, entryways, and verandas during Japan’s warmest months. Their light, distinctive chime has long been associated with the sensation of coolness, turning the movement of summer air into something that can be heard.
Fine Grooves Shape the Sound
The internal clapper, known as the zetsu, is made from crystal glass and engraved with fine grooves. As it moves against the bell, these textured surfaces create a bright aquatic tone reminiscent of a flowing mountain stream.
Nature Expressed Through Glass
Each color draws from a different natural scene. Blue recalls clear summer skies, orange captures the warmth of sunset, pink reflects blooming cherry blossoms, and white evokes freshly fallen snow. Every bell is shaped by hand, giving its color and pattern individual character.
