This substantial framed composition presents a pair of antique Chinese bronze door pulls originally made for an imposing wooden entrance. Each fierce lion mask holds a heavy circular ring in its mouth, combining a working handle with the protective symbolism long incorporated into Chinese architecture.
Found in Shanxi, the two pulls are mounted against a dark architectural panel and enclosed within a deep square frame. Rows of metal fittings and decorative bands extend the language of the original doorway, while the symmetrical presentation allows the hardware to be studied as both sculpture and historic design.
Lion-Head Fittings: Lion imagery was associated with strength, protection, and authority, making it particularly suited to prominent entrances.
Ring-Bearing Form: Known broadly in Chinese architecture as pushou, beast-mask fittings held movable rings used to pull or strike a door.
Paired Arrangement: Chinese guardian lions traditionally appeared in pairs, creating balance while marking the threshold between public and protected space.
Found in Shanxi: The hardware was found in Shanxi, a northern Chinese province known for its extensive legacy of traditional courtyard architecture.
Cast Bronze Faces: Deeply modeled eyes, brows, noses, teeth, and manes give each lion a forceful expression.
Original Ring Pulls: Heavy rings remain suspended from the lions’ mouths, preserving the fittings’ recognizable architectural function.
Dark Framed Ground: Black and bronze tones emphasize the relief of the metalwork and the symmetry of the pair.
Large Square Format: At 33 inches square, the framed composition gives small architectural elements the scale of a significant wall piece.
